How the LEA 360™ Works
The LEA 360™ is one of the world's most highly regarded leadership profiles. It is a complex psychometric instrument which produces a rich insight into your leadership effectiveness. You achieve this by nominating a boss, 2 peer group members and 3 direct reports to assess your leadership in the workplace. Your 360 report therefore shows very clearly how your own self-perception differs from the perception of others. Scores from your observers (except the boss) will be kept anonymous as peer group and direct report scores will be averaged out.

The LEA 360™ has been researched and developed over the last 25 years by the Management Research Group® (MRG). MDS is proud to be part of MRG's worldwide network of expert consulting companies. We are the leading partner in Greater China and have become the global centre of excellence in using the LEA 360™ with Chinese managers.

The LEA 360™ is based on 22 leadership practices arranged in 6 categories:

  • Creating a vision
  • Developing followers
  • Implementing the vision
  • Following through
  • Achieving results
  • Team playing.

It is based on the following 4 assumptions:
  • Effective leadership can and should be present at all levels in the organisation
  • There is no "one right way" to lead
  • Effective leadership is based on behaviour
  • Effective leadership behaviour is situational.

The 360 process allows you to see, perhaps for the first time, how others perceive your leadership in action. The low scores or the differences in perception are the areas which candidates usually target for their personal development plan. However you may also wish to consider any very high scores, as these may contain a "high score potential liability." In the same way a low score is not always bad news as it may carry a "low score potential asset."

Applications of the LEA 360™
Once you have a clear picture of your leadership practices, you will be able to create your own personal development plan to improve your leadership effectiveness. To develop a good plan you also need to know what "ideal leadership profile" your boss wishes for you. This is best done in a coaching session with your boss after you have received your report. Alternatively your boss (or the Senior Management Team) may complete a "role expectations" exercise in advance of your programme. This produces a clearly specified leadership profile for you to aim for.

The LEA 360™ is most commonly delivered to a group of 16 managers. In this case you will receive group feedback from the MDS trainer, who will then design and deliver skills building programmes to help you develop quickly in your low score areas. For specialist programmes using the LEA 360™ please click Growing Great Leaders.

However many senior managers take the LEA 360™ as part of an executive coaching process. In this case you will receive your feedback individually. Your coach will help you create your personal development plan, then coach you over a 6 month period to develop new skills in areas which will significantly improve your leadership effectiveness.

Taking the LEA 360™
You go online to complete your self questionnaire which takes about 45 minutes to complete. You also nominate your observers online, and the online system then invites them to complete an observer's questionnaire. The LEA 360™ administrator in the MDS office follows up the process for you. All questionnaires, including your own, are kept strictly confidential by MDS.

Once all questionnaires have been received the computer generates a personalised 42 page LEA 360™ Report for you. This provides numerical data, plus a rich feedback report complete with profiles, narratives, strategic implications, and developmental opportunities.

Further you will also receive an excellent 80 page "LEA 360™ Resource Guide." This booklet is a comprehensive guide to producing an effective personal development plan. The guide also helps you to manage your own development programme if you do not have the assistance of a coach or tutor.

LEA 360™ Accreditation
LEA 360™ accreditation is only available to consulting companies which are selected by MRG to act as distributors and centres of excellence. However if you wish to be accredited as an in-house LEA 360™ coach, MDS will be pleased to make arrangements for you with MRG. This arrangement is usually made after your company has established an LEA 360™ learning and development relationship with MDS.
